What does it cost to install a home EV charger?

When I am out on a site visit the question is nearly always the same: “What does this actually cost?” The short answer is from around NOK 14,990 installed on a detached house. The long answer means looking at four things.

1. The charger

Easee, Zaptec and Wallbox cost between NOK 7,000 and 14,000 to buy, depending on the model and whether you want load balancing, RFID tags or integration with a solar system. For most detached houses a simple 22 kW charger is plenty, you are charging over several hours anyway.

2. The cable run

This is where the final price moves most. Five metres from the fuse box to a carport is one price. Thirty metres through a basement, up under the joists and out to a detached garage is another. We measure up during the site visit, and that is where I see whether we need to dig or can follow an existing cable route.

3. Type B RCD

NEK 400-7-722 requires a type B RCD for chargers above 16A, unless the charger has one built in. Easee and Zaptec include it, other models need an external type B at NOK 3,000-5,000. Ask us before you order a charger, this is a mistake we see often.

4. Main fuse and circuits

If you have a 25A main fuse and charge the car while the hob and the water heater are running, the circuit can trip. We do a load calculation during the site visit. Upgrading to 32 or 40A costs an extra NOK 8,000-15,000 depending on your grid operator and whether the main cable has to be replaced.
